BAZI: Brief introduction.
« on: June 26, 2008, 01:09:44 PM »
Brief introduction:

Ba Zi is a major system of Chinese metaphysics that consists of hundred and thousands of possible combinations. It is a classical study that date back to the Tang Dynasty. Present day Ba Zi is found by Grand Master Xu Zi Ping who lived in the Five Dynasty Era (AD907 - AD978).

What is the Ba Zi (aka Four Pillars of Destiny) ?

Ba Zi or also known as The Four Pillars of Destiny is a branch of study of Chinese Metaphysics Science (Chinese Astrology).

There are two major systems of Chinese Metaphysics Science which can b used to ascertain a person's Destiny (Fate) are:
i) BaZi (Eight Characters or Four Pillars);
ii) Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology).

Both are equally potent and fascinating.

The Four Pillars Chart is derived from the Date of Birth of a Person using the Chinese Solar Calendar, which is also known as the Hsia Calendar or Farmer's Calendar. This chart can be use to forecast the destiny and characteristics of an individual and the relationships and interaction between the individual with the surrounding environment:

The theory behind the study of four pillars is that The Sun, Moon, Earth; planets in the Solar System emit cosmic energy (chi) all the time. This Cosmic energy is not constant but varies with time depending on the relative positions of the planets.

The Chinese has discovered a few thousand years ago that at any point of time the energy field (chi) surrounding us can be mapped and represented by a combination of 22 characters known as the Ten Heavenly Stems (see Table 1) and Twelve Earthy Branches (see Table 2). This in turn is known as the Hsia Calendar. This calendar is also used for feng shui and for another branch of Chinese Astrology known as Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star astrology).

 When a person is born and takes the first breath of air, the influence of this cosmic energy on the newborn is said to map the destiny and characteristics of that particular person.

The typical Four Pillars chart (Ba Zi) consist of two charts; the main chart and the secondary chart. The main chart is represented by Eight Characters arranged into Four Columns representing the year, month, day and hour of the date of birth obtained from the Hsia Calendar. The secondary chart otherwise known as the Luck Pillar chart consists of a set of pillars with each pillar representing a period of 10 years of an individual's life.

An example of a Four Pillars (Ba Zhi) chart for a male individual born on 28th June 1988 between 5pm to 7pm. is as shown. The arrangement of the Four Pillars chart is based on its original form and its read from right to left.

From the Four Pillars chart by studying the interaction of the characters with each other, one can tell the characteristics of an individual and the relationship between the individual with the surrounding environment:

The Four Pillars chart can also forecast the strength and weakness in our destiny which represents the ups and downs of life by comparing the interaction of the Four Pillars chart with the 10-Year Luck Pillars.

In the study of Ba Zi, one has to understand the characteristics and meanings of the ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches. Upon understanding these characters, the interaction of these characters between each other can be used to foretell the story.

Nobody knows who invented the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. It is said that they existed even before the invention of the Chinese characters. Today, the symbols for the Stems and Branches are seen in the unearthed ancient Chinese oracle bones from the Shang Dynasty (1766 to 1111 BCE).

As noted in the tables below, a given Stem or Branch also contains the energy of one of the Five Elements. As a brief example, the first Heavenly Stem, Jia, contains the energy of Yang Wood. The first Earthly Branch, Zi, contains the energy of Yang Water.

Traditional Chinese astrology names each year according to its Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. For instance, this year (2006) is called Bing Xu. Bing is the Heavenly Stem and it means Yang Fire. Xu is the Earthly Branch and it means Yang Earth. The astrological animal associated with Xu is the dog. This is the origin of those astrological animals on restaurant menus ? they are a part of the Earthly Branch energy.

Naming years in this fashion functions not only to keep track of the year but also to characterize the energy of that time period. The energies of each month, date, or even time of day (in two-hour increments) are also reflected by a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch.

Five Element (wu xing)

A basic understanding of the Five Elements is essential in regard to BaZi.
(Refer to Table 1, below):

According to Chinese astrology, our universe consists of five basic elements namely Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth . Everything, including humans,in the universe must have a relationship with these five elements. So the five elements are applied not only to every physical thing in the world, but also to the Colors, Directions, Seasons and Sounds,Years, Months, Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds of the Chinese Calendar.These elements, calculated from the date of birth and time ,gives valuable insights in addition to their animal signs into the psyche of the person concerned, their inherent tendencies and their personalities in general.

Relation between Elements

These element relations are conducive, beneficial, congenial, friendly, supporting and generating.(Affinity Relationship)

Water generates Wood - Water is the mother of Wood
Wood generates Fire - Wood is the mother of Fire
Fire generates Earth - Fire is the mother of Earth
Earth generates Metal - Earth is the mother of Metal
Metal generates Water - Metal is the mother of Water

The elements have the capability to destroy, defeat, overcome and overwhelm the other elements as well. (Destructive Relationship)

Water can extinguish Fire
Wood can break the Earth
Fire can melt Metal
Earth can make Water disappear
Metal can break Wood
The elements are also hostile, fighting, resisting, and hurting mutually one another.(Replusive Relationship)

Water dislikes Fire
Wood dislikes Earth
Fire dislikes Metal
Earth dislikes Water
Metal dislikes Wood

Characteristics of people based on the Five Elements

Earth Element People- Persons, whose representative element is the earth, are faithful to their masters, have an idealistic character but are highly ambitious. These persons have dual character. They wish and desire that other persons should accord importance to them, and they desire a loving treatment, in return for for their love. They should avoid and stay away from moisture and marshy lands.

Fire Element People- Persons of fire element have magnetic and attractive personality, remain happy and excited. They wish to remain bound in the love- bounds of their relatives, as they despise seclusion. They are hypersensitive and quick messengers. They should avoid hyper emotivity and planes where there is too much heat.

Water Element People- Such persons are imaginative, philosphers and thinkers. They are clever, scholarly and believe in free lancing. They take up multiple professions. They believe in conferring secrets to themselves only. They should avoid water-laden places.

Metal Element People- They are excellent calculators. They wish to lead an ordelry and principled life. They also like hygenic and balanced environment.Quality is the creed of their life. They should avoid dry places.

Wood Element People- They are high class artists or artisans and perform their work diligently and remain committed to their work and are adept in their profession. They wish to remain busy, and believe in the sort of life which is hardwork oriented. They indulge in wasteful expenditure. They should avoid such places where strong wind blows.

Plotting your BaZi Chart

There are many software you can use to find your BaZi chart but it very interesting to plot manually. It quite fun once you know the steps.

Each BaZi chart contains two aspects: a static BaZi chart which comprise of the Four Pillars, and the dynamic aspect of the chart, which is the Luck Pillars.

Using your personal birth data (lunar dates of course), such as:

i) Year of Birth
ii) Month of Birth
iii) Day of Birth
iv) Time of Birth

There are many software to find your lunar data ( if you are not sure), e.g.
 newbielink:http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com/CFTCal2.htm [nonactive]
 newbielink:http://www.henryfong.com/10000-r.htm [nonactive]
 newbielink:http://www.china.org.cn/english/en-12sx/index.htm [nonactive]

Let's start plotting.

Step 1 : Draw a box as follow:
Step 2 : Converting your Gregorian Year of birth.

Nowaday, it is very easy to do this. All Feng Shui magazines or books will surely have a listing, including the wonderful Tung Shing. There are many software too, like:

 newbielink:http://site.baidu.com/list/wannianli.htm [nonactive]

Your lunar Year of birth follows the Hsia Calendar. (Chinese are very "kia-su", they already have two calendars!....more on this later).

Thus, if you are born on 17th February 1999, you're a Earth Rabbit jǐmăo (己卯);
whereas if you are born on 15 February 1999, you are a Earth Tiger (w?y?n (戊寅));

Step 3 : Identify the Year Pillar

Let take the example of a person born on (Lunar) date 14 February 1999 at 11.35am.

1999 is the Year of the Earth Rabbit (己 卯)
Thus his Year Pillow would be Earth Rabbit. Filled this data in your Year Pillar, as follow:

Step 4: Identify the Month Pillar

From the above Month Chart, February is the Tiger Month, 寅.
Thus the Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar is 寅.

Referring to any Ten Thousand Year Calendar, in the Year 1999, Lunar Month
February, lunar day 14, it will show as 丙. Thus the Heaven stem of the Month Pillar is 丙. Now your BaZi chart will look like this:

Step 5: Identify the Day Pillar

Again, referring to any Ten Thousand Year Calendar, it is easy to find the Day Pillar. You will find that the Day Pillar for 1999 lunar 2nd Month, 29th day is Ding You (丁酉).

Step 6: Identify the Hour Pillar

Now, in our example, this person is born at 11.35am, the Hour Pillar branch is therefore Rat Hour (子 时), so write it in the Earth branch of the Hour Pillar:

To find the Heaven Stem of the Hour Pillar, just cross-refer to the below chart. As the Day is Ding and the Hour is Zi, cross-referring you will find Ren Zi (壬 子).

Plotting the Luck Pillar

First, you would need to know a little on two very important concepts:

i) Forward Cycle

ii) Reverse Cycle

These refer to the sequence when reading the Heavenly Stems for male and for female (Yin or Yang). Noticed a Yang Sten is always followed by a Yin Stem, and a Yin Stem followed by a Yang Stem? (Note: Forward or Reverse used here do not carry any negative indication. It's only the movement of the Heavenly Stems' sequence.)

How to determine Forward or Reverse Cycle?

Two factors determine whether it's a Forward or Reverse cycle, namely;

i) Gender of the individual (i.e. Male of Female)

ii) Polarity of the Birth Year (i.e born in the Yang or Yin year)
This is indicated in your Year Pillar. In our example, Mr Rabbit is born
in the Year Ji Mao (己 卯), Ji being Yin Earth, therefore, he is a Yin Male.

Thus,

Forward Cycle -- Yang Male, Yin Female

Reverse Cycle -- Yin Male, Yang Female

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Now we are ready to plot the Luck Pillow of Mr Rabbit.

As Mr Rabbit is a Yin Male, therefore he will use a Reverse Cycle of the Heavenly Stem. The Luck Pillar is plotted using the Month Pillar' elements.

Since his Year Pillow Heavenly Stem is Ji (己), thus his first Luck Pillow Heavenly Stem start from Geng (庚). His Year Pillow Earthly Branch is Mao (卯), thus his Luck Pillow's Earthly Branch will start from Chen (辰).

The ancient Chinese YIN-YANG scholars believed that three are two natural, complementary and contradictory forces in our universe. The scholars named them as YIN and YANG.
YIN represents the female, weaknesss, darkness, softness, moisture, night-time, even numbers and docile aspects of things.
YANG represents the male, strength, brightness, hardness, dryness, day-time. odd numbers and dominant aspects.
YIN and YANG are continually in the state of flux and always looking for the BALANCE point. One moves , the other responses. Therefore, ancient scholars treated this natural phenomenon as a natural universal law. (Please also refer to the thread on the origin of Yin & Yang).

These scholars also believed that our universe consisted of five basic elements, which are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth (Soil). Everything, including humans, in the universe (between Heaven and Earth) must have a relationship with these five elements. So they tried to apply the five elements not only to every physical thing in the world, but also to the Colors, Directions, Seasons and Sounds. They even applied to the Years, Months, Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds of the Chinese Calendar. Now, people are able to know their five-element weights from their birth date and time. Based on the combination of these five-element weights plus the concept of the natural phenomenon, they can tell the rise and fall of human destiny (fate) cycle.

FIVE ELEMENTS does not only mean metal, water, wood, fire and soil. The "element" in Chinese also means MOVEMENT, CHANGEABLE and DEVELOPMENT. These elements have their Ying and Yang sides too. They are moving, waning, waxing and changing all the time. Just like Ying and Yang, the movements of five elements are slow and stable when they are in kind of balance. If they are out of balance, then the movements are unstable and unpredictable. When a person is in a stable (five-element) environment, he should live peacefully. When a person is in an unpredictable environment, he is easily out of control. A person will feel lucky when everything is under control. A person will feel bad luck when everything is out of control. If you want to be a lucky person, you have to move to an environment to bring your five elements into balance.

An understanding of the inter-relationship of the Seasons is vital in Bazi analysis. The above chart clearly show this!

This section explained these relationship which show the value/strength of your Day Master or your Self Element. Here's a brief explanation of the new term introduced, namely, Properous, Strong, Weak, Trap & Dead.

Spring Season: 春

Month: February (Yin/寅/Tiger);
March (Mao/卯/Rabbit);
April (Chen/辰/Dragon).

Wood is the Element, thus Wood is the most "Prosperous " element
In the Productive Cycle, Wood produce Fire. thus Fire in Spring is also "Strong ".

When Wood is strong, Water is Weak because Wood consume a lot of Water to grow.

Metal is Trapped (how to mine the metal in a thick forest where the trees grow tall and plentiful?)

Similarly, in Spring where Wood is strong, Earth would be Dead - Wood control Earth.

Summer Season : 夏

Month: May (Si/巳 /Snake);
June (Wu/戊 /Horse);
July (Wei/未 /Goat).

Fire is the Element of Summer, thus Fire is the most Propsperous element.

Those born in the Summer is considered having a Strong Fire element.

Thus, Wood will be weak (need plenty of wood to supply this strong Fire). Doesn't this destroy the Wood? No, because Summer follow Spring when Wood is Strong.

Water is weak in Summer as the strong Summer heat will dry up water, thus Water is considered trapped. Although Water control Fire, but in a wild fire, little water cannot do much.

As Fire is so strong, Metal is dead. Fire control Metal, thus with such a strong Fire, all Metal will be melted, thus considered dead.

Autumn Season : 秋

Month: August (Shen/申\ /Monkey);
September (You/酉/ Rooster);
October (Xu/戌 /Dog).

Autumn is the season of Metal, thus Metal is the most prosperous element.

Those born in the Autumn month will have a strong Metal element.

Since Metal produce Water, Water is also considered strong (for those born in the month of Autumn)

Earth is considered weak in Autumn since Metal is so prosperous (i.e. plentiful), a lot of Earth will be dug up to produce Metal. But with so much digging, isn't Earth considered dead? No, because Autumn follow Summer (when Fire is strong, Fire produced much Earth).

Fire is considered weak in Autumn. Although. Fire control Metal, but in Autumn Metal is so strong, a small Fire can't melt the Metal, so Fire is also weak in Autumn.

In Autumn, Wood is considered dead since Metal is so strong, all the wood will be cut down.

Winter Season : 冬

Month: November (Hai/亥/Pig);
December (Zi/子/Rat);
January (Chou/丑/Ox).

Winter is the season of Water, thus Water is the prosperous element.

Water produce Wood, thus Wood is considered strong (in Winter) too.

In Winter, Metal will be weak. Metal is weaken(exhaused) by producing so much Water. However, Metal is not considered dead because Winter follow Autumn (when Metal is strong).

Earth is also consider weak in Winter. Earth control Water but in Winter when Water is plentiful, Earth cannot control Water (that's why we have river bursting its bank and cause massive floor!

In Winter (Water is strong), Fire is Dead (extingushed)

Now we are ready for some fun!

Having known some of the "basic" of Bazi terms and code, we can start the party....

Bazi is multi-faced, i.e multi-layered. You have to lift layer by layer. The eight characters in the Four Pillar chart will show all. Any Bazi analysis always start from decoding the Day Master. What is a Day Master? The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. The Day Master is also known as the "Self Eelment". It also represent your wife if you're a male (more on this later).

The next step is to evaluates the Day Master's strength. The Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar:

Thus, Mr Rabbit is a Yin Fire born in the month of the Tiger/Yin. Remember that month of Tiger/Yin is Spring? Spring is the month of the Yang Wood. From the preceeding posting on Season, Fire is considered strong (because Wood produces Fire. Thus, Mr Rabbit's Day Master is strong. Also remember that for male, the Day Master is also known as the Self Element and also represent his wife...He will have a good wife! Congrats!

How to choose the best career?

Although there are many ways, a quick & acruate method is using the Favorable Element. How to determine your Favorable Element? Look at the Month's Earthly Branch. In Mr Rabbit's Chart, he is born on a Ding (Yin Fire) day in a "Yin" (Yang Wood) month, i.e. in the Spring. Thus, Wood is his Favorable Element.

From your Favorable element, a person can then establish the revelant career that he/she will excel. Here's a brief summary of career by the Five elements:

Fire element:
Fire industry includes
i) Health & Beauty
Doctor, Nurses, Beauticians, Pharmacists, all related to external wellness.
ii) Services
Sales Reps, Counter services, clerical and mostly white-collars jobs.
iii) Airlines & its related industry
Pilot, Air hostress, Warden, Fire-men, fire-fighters and all job
related to Fire
iv) I.T.
Computer related jobs
v) those combustibles like petrol, lighting,etc

Water element:
i) Transportation & logistics
ii) Courier & postal services
iii) Tourism
iv) Scientist & Inventors
v) Navy
vi) Industries related to fish & water

Earth element:
i) Property & Real Estates related jobs
ii) Building materials related jobs
iii) Antiques & Art dealers
iv) Doctors & Medium
v) Insurance related jobs

Metal element:
i) Armed Force
ii) Police Force
iii) Lawyers & its related services
iv) Goldsmith & its related services
v) all metal related jobs

Wood element:
i) Educators, Trainers & Motivators
ii) Timber & its related jobs
iii) Furniture maker & dealers
iv) Fashion & Designers
v) All wood related jobs

Health is Wealth

There are many method in BaZi to ascertain a person's ailments or health related problems. Since this is an elementary introduction on BaZi, I will share one easy method. Your Unfavoravable elements will points to the type of ailments or potential problems.

Recap: An Unflavorable element is an element that will harm your Flavorable element. (Note: this is concluded based on understanding so far. In advance Bazi, decoding an elment Flavorable or Unflavorable is much much interesting and detailed).

Elements:
FIRE:
Heart related illness. Head related. Eyes related, like visual problems.

EARTH:
Stomach or abdomen-related. Digestive systems. Skin related illness.

METAL:
Lungs and Interestines related. Breathing problems,etc.

WATER:
Sexual organs and its related illness. Urinary related illness.

WOOD:
Liver, Limbs, Veins and arteries related illness.

The cure in Bazi is taking actions. Knowing the problem is one thing, taking action to prevent and/or cure is another.

Most people were misled in "Placement Theraphy". They were told that if Water is weak, place a water fountain or a fish tank in certain location will fix the problem. This is most misleading and at time harmful feng shui too! "Placement Theraphy" include gold pendants or jade wares. Such misuse is due to such dealers capitalizing on people ignorance. At least pendant won't hurt - but water fountain, fish tank and swimming pools will! Be warned!

THE COSMIC TRINITY

The ancient Chinese YIN-YANG scholars thought the universe was divided into three parts. The first part is Heaven, the second part is Earth and the third one is for all living species. Because humans are in charge of all the living species, the third one is named Man.

We can find Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth everywhere on the ground. The Chinese scholars named them the Five Elements. (Note: The word "Element" does means tangible element. It's more towards "environmental condition"). Man live between Heaven and Earth just like the Five Elements. Therefore Man must maintain a relationship with the Five Elements or be like them. As there are affinity and enmity relationships among the Five Elements, there must be similar relationships among Man (human beings, that is).

For example, trees have their own growth cycle in between Heaven and Earth. Man must have life cycles similar to those of trees. The seasonal changes affect the growth of trees. Trees grow faster in the spring and slower in the fall. The environmental changes also affect the life of trees. Without adequate sunshine, trees grow too slowly. With too much heat, trees will be dried out. Without water, trees cannot grow. With too much water, trees will be uprooted and afloat. With insufficient earth, trees will not grow tall....

The Man life cycle is also affected by the same seasonal and environmental changes. The seasonal changes come from the Sun and Moon which are the clock for the calendars. The Chinese calendar is designed from the Sun (thus the Solar calendar) and the Moon (thus the Lunar calendar) plus the Stem-Branch (concept from trees) cycle. Chinese YIN-YANG scholars have for thousands of years applied the Five Elements on the Chinese Stem-Branch calendar. This way Man can get their Five Element weights using their birthdays and times
When the seasons and environment change, the Five Elements have certain responses. Man respond in a similar way. The YIN-YANG scholars made predictions on the Man life cycle, from birth to death, by using this natural phenomenon. Thus we have Heaven Luck (Destiny), Man Luck (Your prerogatives/personal choice) and Earth luck (Yin/Yang House Factor, another area of study by itself).

Heaven's Luck: This is known as destiny, fate, karma, or luck. Heaven is the source of spirit, believed to account for one third of the influences in our lives. This is our gift at birth, our fate, or karmic inheritance.

Man's Luck: This is what we develop and achieve through our efforts of hard work, discipline, education and the development of personal virtues. Man hold their place between Heaven and Earth and are the bearers of that unique force of human spirit, or will. This accounts for another one third of the influences upon our lives.

Earth Luck : The source of essential elements for life. This is where Yin/Yang House Feng Shui enters our lives by harnessing the energy and forces of nature. Earth's Luck is our invitation to use the tools provided around us to our advantage. By practicing Yin/Yang House Feng Shui principles, we can alter, enhance and support the positive aspects of Heaven's Luck as well as channel both the positive and negative aspects of Man's Luck towards our best interest.

The Five Factors:

The inter-relationship of the Five Elements (together with the Yin Yang polarity) produces the Five Factors, namely:

Wealth Factor

Output Factor

Influence Factor

Resource Factor

Companion Factor

These Five Factors relates to our daily life (whether we like it or not). In short it control our life. Thus an understanding is critical if we want to understand why and what's happenings as well as to enjoy a better lifestyle.

The Wealth Factor:

The Wealth Factor is the element that is controlled by the Day Master. From the above chart, Wood controls Earth, thus Earth is the Wealth element to people with Wood Day Master. Similarly, Metal control Wood, thus Wood is the Wealth element for people with Metal Day Master.

However, bear in mind the Yin Yang polarity. In decoding, one must also be aware of the season of the Month Earthly branch and other factors like Hidden stems and the Ten God. No, these 'Ten God' are not deity. It's only a name given to ten influencing factors (more on that later).

This is a Jia(Wood) guy. Thus his Wealth element is Earth. But there is no Earth element in his chart. Furthermore, he was born in Shen (a dry Autumn). Thus he will need Water.

Also note that his Wealth element is also his Wife element. Thus his wife will not have much influence in his life (but not a bad wife too as Earth weaken Fire-thus will assist indirectly).

From his Luck Pillar, it can be seen that his early life (from age 4 to 34), he had a very very hard life. His life begins to gets better or calmer from age 34 to 54.
His life will be good from 55 onwards.

In general, this is not a very bad life after all, as he can enjoin his Middle and Golden Age!

[Note:
i) The Year & Month Heavenly stem Bing & Xin combination (which will produce Water);
ii) The Hour & Day' Earthly branch, Wu + Wu together is known as 'Self punishment'.)

The OUTPUT Factor

Output Factor is the element that is "produced" by the Day Master (in the production cycle in the Five Element relationship).

The Output Factors represent the following:

i) a person's creativity;

ii) a person's intelligence;

iii) a person's expressive ability
iii.i against the norm
iii.ii Achieve the extraordinary
iii.iii Stand out (in the crowd)
iii.iv initiate a plan/strategy

iv) a person persuasive power

v) communication skills

In a chart where the Output Factor is a Favourable element, that person is surely to have a strong personal drive and determination to succeed. This person is likely to be creative, talented (in oral skills), teaching, marketing or acting and singing skills.

The INFLUENCE factor

INFLUENCE Factor is the element that "control" the Day Master (in the production cycle in the Five Element relationship).

INFLUENCE factor represents:

i) Authority
ii) Charisma
iii) Nobility
iv) law & order
v) Strict adherence to rules & regulations.
vi) The Husband star ( for ladies).

INFLUENCE factor is a two edged sword. A person with a Flavourable Influence element is normally a person who is law abiding, conservative, respectful and honest.

However, a person with too much Influence elements are people who are rebel, non-conformist, always defying authority or must have their own ways.

A person with an Unflavorable Influence element usually are people who is radical, restless and does not like to take orders and advice from others.

The Influence Factor/element is very important to a lady as it represents the Husband. Care is needed to read this special element (especially the season of the Month branch must be carefully taken into account).

The RESOURCE Factor

The RESOURCE factor is the Element that produces your Day Master.

It represents:

i) Your personal perceptive, i.e your thinking and knowledge;
ii) Your learning ability
iii) Your wisdom
iv) Your family background, i.e your roots
v) Support/help from superior
vi) Your intruition or sixth sense

People with a Flavourable Resource factor are individuals who are intellectuals, loves learning and focused on continuous self-improvement

Thus people with an Unflavorable Resource factor are likely to have poor intellectual skills and probably have bad habits, lazy and pessimitics. Hates learning, usually are dropouts, etc.

ai Sui (Grand duke of jupiter), Tsui Po (year breaker) and San Sha (three killings) are three malific annual stars that change position every year. The directions these positions represent are considered inauspicious for that particular year. However, their detrimental effect (loss of money, health problems etc) can only be felt if they are disturbed. Disturbance can be caused by renovation work, digging earth or construction work. The study of these stars fall under the San He branch of feng shui however their basis is in Bazi - Chinese astrology.

Tai Sui (Grand Duke of Jupiter)
Tai Sui is also known as the Grand Duke of Jupiter. Even though Tai Sui is called the Grand Duke of Jupiter, it does not represent the actual planet Jupiter. Tai Sui is an intangible star whose movement is directly opposite to that of the planet Jupiter.

The position of Tai Sui corresponds to the year earthly branch (the animal sign of the year) of any given year. Tai Sui has a twelve years cycle and the Chinese zodiac system also has twelve animals. In the compass it occupies 30 degrees. The position of Tai Sui changes in the first day of the first month of the Chinese solar calendar, generally this day falls on 4th February in the Georgian Calendar. Given below is a chart of the exact degrees Tai Sui occupies in the next 5 years.
 Year        Degrees       Afflicted area
4th Feb 2004 - 3rd Feb 2005     235 - 255 degrees   Monkey (Shen)
4th Feb 2005 - 3rd Feb 2006   255 - 285 degrees    Rooster (You)
4th Feb 2006 - 3rd Feb 2007   285 - 315 degrees   Dog (Xu)
 4th Feb 2007 - 3rd Feb 2008    315 - 345 degrees   Pig (Hai)
4th Feb 2008 - 3rd Feb 2009   345 - 15 degrees    Rat (Zi)
Tsui Po generally doesn't create any problems until it is disturbed. By disturbance it means renovations, repairs, construction, digging of earth in other words any form of earth works is to be avoided in the area. If one needs to do earth works in this area it is advisable to choose a good date from the Chinese almanac (Tong shu).

It is considered all right if your house faces the Tsui Po direction but one needs to exert caution if one's house is sitting (your house behind) on Tsui Po. This rule is same as the Tai Sui rule that states that a house can sit on Tai Sui that would mean the house faces Tsui Po but it is considered bad to be facing Tai Sui and sitting on Tsui Po. For a layman not to get lost amongst all these rules it is best to remember not to disturb the area where these stars reside for the particular year.

San Sha (Three killings)
San Sha is also known as three killings. Probably the reason behind the name is because three earthly branches are involved. In bazi twelve animals have a triplicity formation called the frames, grouping three earthly branches to represent a particular element. The frames constitute of one cardinal sign, one mutable or traveling (as called by the Chinese) sign and one fixed or earth sign, The Chinese astrological triplicity/frames are as follows - Monkey, Rat and Dragon form the water frame; Pig, Rabbit and Goat form the wood frame; Tiger, Horse and Dog forms the fire frame and finally Snake, Rooster and Ox form the metal frame.

Given below diagram of the Chinese animals along with the triplicity formation (frames).

To understand this further one needs a little understanding of the Chinese seasons. The Tiger marks the beginning of spring and ends at the Dragon, therefore Tiger, Rabbit (cardinal direction - East) and Dragon represent the entire spring season. In the same manner Snake, Horse (cardinal direction - South) and Goat represent summer; Monkey, Rooster (Cardinal direction - West) and Dog represent autumn and Pig, Rat (Cardinal direction - North) and Ox represents winter.

Given below is the diagram of the Chinese seasons along with the Chinese animals.

The triplicity frame denotes the year, opposite to the frames cardinal direction lies the San Sha location for eg. in the year of the Monkey(Shen), Rat (Cardinal direction North) or Dragon (Chen), the San Sha's location is Horse (Wu). San Sha is always located in the cardinal directions. Now, Horse belongs to the summer season whereby we take into account Snake and Goat. For making it simple in the year of the Monkey, Rat or Dragon we say that San Sha is in South.

Given below location of San Sha for the next five years.
 Dates    Earthly Branch of the year    Afflicted Area
4th Feb 2004 - 3rd Feb 2005   Monkey (Shen)    South
4th Feb 2005 - 3rd Feb 2006    Rooster (You)   East
4th Feb 2006 - 3rd Feb 2007   Dog (Xu)    North
4th Feb 2007 - 3rd Feb 2008   Pig (Hai)      West
4th Feb 2008 - 3rd Feb 2009    Rat (Zi)       South
Disturbing the San Sha can cause betrayal, robbery, and loss of money, injuries, illnesses and fatalities. The degree of ill effect however varies ranging from a small amount of money loss to bankruptcy or a common flu to major illness.

Avoid digging, construction, any form of earth works in the San Sha area for that particular year. If it is absolutely essential to do renovation and repair works then it is advisable to consult the Chinese Almanac (Tong Shu) for appropriate date selection.

San Sha can show its malicious side particularly when it is located in the same area with Tsui Po, this happens every three years i.e. 2002, 2005, 2008 and so on. These years one needs to be careful not to disturb the particular area.

The ancient texts do mention that it is acceptable to have your house facing San Sha but it is quite detrimental to sit (house behind) on San Sha. This is said probably because one of the names of San Sha is Robbery Sha and robbers do have a tendency to attack from behind then the front of the property.

Tai Sui, Tsui Po and San Sha are stars that need to be carefully looked into while you are planning to build a house or contemplating some form of earth works. As the trigger for these stars is ground breaking (earth works), disturbance of the area like digging, renovation etc, one needs to be careful or you might just face the wrath of these stars.
