So how did the early heaven bagua evolve into the river map, any idea? ... And from there, how did the river map evolve into the magic square? I asked this question on another list but since the topic is here already might as well try my luck here. Anyone can point me to some reliable source?

Hi Metalwind,

The early heaven bagua is energy in perfect balance but static in nature.
The later heaven bagua is energy in cyclical change but dynamic in nature.

The problem with the early heaven bagua is perfect balance is not achievable in the physical world. 
King Wen saw this problem and rearrange the bagua to reflect the cyclical nature of the physical world.
The magic square is the river map.  There are still debates whether the early bagua is even related to the later heaven bagua.

Concerning reliable sources, much of the world's past are shrouded in myth and legend.  How you do measure reliable when they speak in lores and legends?
